Blank Page

Starting a new book is kind of scary. That first blank white page is daunting in its emptiness, and every time I start a new book, I can’t really remember how I did it before. I feel a sudden fear that I’ll never be able to write another story again.

Fortunately, that has never yet proved the case, and I’m about to start my seventh (!) novel. (I do have the caveat, though, that a couple of the early ones had some pretty¬†beginnerish elements and I have no plans to share them).

I’ve been struggling for a few weeks to decide what to write next. I have lots of ideas, but none of them felt quite right for my next project. I finally decided to try something a bit different, and I think it’s going to take a fair amount of concentration, and it’s scary and exciting. It’s time I challenged myself with writing again, I think. Confession: I’ve been so focused on trying to get published and trying to write what I think other people want that it’s been a little while since writing was actually fun. And it can be – even when it’s hard, which is often, there’s something ultimately rewarding and soul-calming in it, and that’s why I keep doing it. So I’m going to write my seventh novel, and I’m going to like it, damnit.

While I was doing all this self-evaluation about my writing, I clearly neglected my blog. I have a feeling that I might not be updating it super frequently over the summer, either. You know how lifestyle magazines are always recommending that you need an uncluttered work space? I’m taking that advice, and using it for my mind as well as my desk. With this new book making my fingertips twitch to type it out, and some extra projects at work (I rarely talk about my day job, but I do have one. I work full time in a job completely unrelated to my writing), this is going to be a busy summer, and my blog might take a hit.

But I’ll be back sooner than later, I promise. Maybe I’ll share some excerpts of my new story, or if I’m really lucky, I’ll be able to celebrate some good news about my last novel¬†Lady of the Revolution, which is about to go out on submission.
